To achieve the best results when gluing, it is important to ensure that the relative humidity is less than 60% and that the ambient air temperature falls within the range of 18C to 25C (65 F to 77F), while also avoiding direct sunlight. Prior to patching, it is essential to clean both the patching area on the boat and the contact side of the patch. For this, it is recommended to use M.E.K. (Methyl Ethel Ketone) patching solvent and cleaner.
Please be warned that the product contains Polyurethane, and M.E.K. can be harmful if inhaled and cause eye irritations. It may also lead to sensitization if inhaled, as well as skin dryness and cracking with repeated exposure. Therefore, it is important to keep the product away from sources of ignition and avoid smoking, breathing vapor/spray, and working near open flames, sparks, or other heat sources. In case of eye contact, it is crucial to rinse immediately with plenty of fresh water and seek medical attention. The use of M.E.K. should be restricted to well-ventilated areas. Glue and all chemical materials should be kept out of the reach of children, stored in a cool and safe spot, and preserved for up to 3 years.
Before use, it is recommended to mix 5% hardener (treatment) with the glue, with the maximum addition of 10% hardener when working in cold weather (10C-15C) or high humidity (50-75%). However, the mixture should not exceed 10% of the glue. M.E.K. can be used as a thinner for PVC glue, and can also be added in up to 10% to reactivate the glue if it hardens. Glue mixed with hardener can be preserved for up to 6 hours.
For application, it is advised to use a small paint brush to apply 1-3 layers of glue on both material surfaces, allowing 5 minutes between applications for the glue to dry before connecting the two pieces of material. After applying the patch, it is important to start from the center and move outwards with, for example, a teaspoon, to force out any air bubbles, followed by applying pressure to the repaired area for at least 24 hours. It is then necessary to wait 48 hours for the glue to cure before using.
Regarding the types of glue, PVC glue can be used as a single part, but for better results, it is recommended to use 2 Part glue (glue and hardener) to ensure overall quality and extend the life of the bonding, particularly for air leak repairs. Sealed in bottles, glue and hardener can be kept for up to 3 years.
The instructions for applying glue layers are as follows: 1-2 layers on a new fabric surface, 2-3 layers on an old fabric surface, 3-4 layers for a wood or plywood surface, and 2-3 layers for parts or an aluminum surface. However, for a Hypalon boat fabric, the fabric must have a coating layer, and sanding the boat fabric to remove this coating prior to gluing is a must.
It is important to only mix the required amount of glue for the repair, seal the bottle immediately, and store it in a cool area for future use. If the hardener turns to crystals or becomes sticky, it should no longer be used. For cleaning the area requiring repair, Methyl Hydrate, Acetone, or MEK can be used.
